Killarney Racing

If there are two things Ireland does well it is horseracing and wonderful scenic landscapes and when these two things come together it is something truly special indeed. County Kerry forms the south western part of the country and boasts some of the most stunning natural wonders imaginable.

Killarney Racing, inside rail The remarkable long coastline, and mountains and lakes of Co. Kerry have helped define Ireland as a whole and in its towns and people, the culture and history of the country is indelibly stamped and celebrated through many festivals, in art, in music and in racing. The town of Killarney is where all these things come together and when it comes to Killarney racing the thrill and fun of the races is just the start of the adventure.

It is said that Killarney has more beds for visitors than any other place in Ireland outside the capital city Dublin. A measure of its appeal for visitors, they come from all over the world to experience an authentic slice of Ireland and to spend summers immersed in the incredible surrounds of Killarney National Park.

To one side of the town are the mountains of the MacGillicuddy Reeks and to the other is Lough Leane, one of the three Killarney Lakes. In the middle is a wealth of history and culture played out in the streets, pubs and clubs. SummerFest is the main social event of the year and features international groups and performers, while theatre, arts, music and children’s activities pervade from every part of the town.

Killarney racing takes the form of festivals too, with the main four day summer festival held in July, a three day festival in May and a two day festival in August. Seemingly inseparable from the artistic and cultural expression of the town, racing has been around since 1822 and as well as featuring in music and art has been eloquently described by Vanity Fair author W.M. Thackeray. Then as now, Killarney racing attracts famous celebrities as well as great numbers of holidaymakers looking for a great day out, some well contested racing, and some welcome hospitality.

The racing takes place on an oval track, left-handed, over a circuit of one mile two furlongs. Typical of Irish racecourses there is both flat and National Hunt racing to enjoy and the most popular fixtures are those of the July Festival.

Admission is €18 for the August Festival and €20 for the others. €12 concessions are available for senior citizens and students. Discounts are available for group bookings of 20 or more and children under 12 are admitted free, making Killarney racing a great value for money option for a family fun day out.

Killarney Racing, photo finish There is a restaurant at the course in which to enjoy some excellent race day dining with alternatives provided by pub food and snack bars. A new hospitality suite is also available for private parties and corporate gatherings.

All inclusive hospitality options include a corporate package which comprises entry into the hospitality suite, four course dining, racecard, tipster, and drink service. The suite has great views over the course, parade ring and beautiful landscape beyond.

Further facilities at Killarney racing are found within the Maurice O' Donoghue Stand, where parties of up to 250 people can be accommodated in style and comfort.

With views directly over the finish line, there are few better vantage points for the racing and hospitality packages can be specifically tailored for any private event or party during race day. Live entertainment can be supplied after the races have finished and all the attractions and nightlife of the town are within easy reach on foot.
